After hearing from many of you that 10-Year Thinking is a challenge, I felt compelled to write on this topic again. Over 3,000 people have taken our True Self Assessment and 76% of those struggle with imagining their lives 10 years into the future. Why is that? Many of you find it difficult to visualize where you will be in the next decade because your attention is often absorbed by the demands of today. It also can seem scary for you—you may actually fear the future!
Getting Started
When you think in 10 year time frames, you have even more clarity about where you are headed and why. Many of you shared with me it’s hard to get started on this. So, I’ll make it easy for you. First, imagine yourself 10 years from now—how old will you be? What year will it be?
Ask yourself:
- What kind of spouse or partner do I want to be?
- What kind of parent, child, or sibling do I want to become?
- What role do I want to play in my business?
- Where do I want to live?
These questions are simpler to answer than you think. The moment you start visualizing, you realize that you do have a sense of direction for these areas of your life. This is your 10-year vision starting to take shape.
Journaling prompt:
Take a moment to reflect on how you see yourself in 10 years. Write down three words that describe the emotions and feelings you want to experience at that time. Why do these feelings matter to you?
Turning Vision into Action
Once you have your answers to these questions, writing the 10-Year Thinking Vision is easy. It can be as simple as one sentence or as detailed as a couple of paragraphs. This vision doesn’t have to include every aspect of your life but should reflect what matters most to you in the long run—impact, inner peace, high vibrational energy, or all three!
Once you write it, keep the vision at the forefront by incorporating Discipline 8: Prepare Every Night. Before your head hits the pillow each night and you document the next day’s play, also take 30 seconds to read your 10-Year Vision.
Journaling prompt:
Write one sentence that describes your 10-Year Vision. How will reading this vision every night impact the choices you make tomorrow? (Hint: AI can help you write it!)
Being In The Present Moment
10-Year Thinking keeps you in the present moment because once you are clear about what is most important to you 10 years from now, you will align your actions with that. It also takes the pressure off of immediate results and allows you to feel at ease knowing that the seeds you plant today will grow into something meaningful.
10-Year Thinking will ensure you maintain your drive while simultaneously cultivating a sense of inner peace and purpose. When you know where you are going, you can let go of unnecessary stress and focus on what truly matters.
Journaling prompt:
Think about one decision you need to make this week. How can you align that decision with your 10-Year Vision?
